On behalf of the economic development office of Richton Park, I would like to wish you very happy holidays.  We hope that the holidays and the coming year offer a brighter, more promising and prosperous time for our businesses, citizens, employers and employees. 

 

This week, the Richton Park Merchant’s Chamber is pleased to announce the start of the 2009 Holiday Shopping Spree program.  Stop by any participating Richton Park business and you can have the chance to win one of 3,500 instant prizes, or an opportunity to enter the grand prize drawing.  The grand prize is a $700 shopping spree at Super Save Grocery.  2nd Prize in the drawing is a Grandfather Clock from Omnibus Clocks.  There are more than 40 other prizes offered in the drawing as well.  Visit www.richtonparkmerchantschamber.org for details.

 

Tomorrow at 4 PM, Grand Prairie Choral Arts, our area’s premier choral music group, will be performing their holiday concert at Flossmoor Community Church.   More details are included in the news below.  This is expected to be a great concert.

 

The past two months have been very exciting here in Richton Park.  We broke ground on our new community center and celebrated the grand opening of Lakewood Plaza. The Village welcomed a new Village manager and we have been fortunate enough to celebrate the opening of a few new businesses.   Please read below to learn more about the recent happenings in Economic Development in Richton Park.

Lakewood Plaza held its grand opening on Saturday 31 OCT 2009.   The family-oriented event featured treats, prizes, a haunted maze, and a reptile show by Cold Blooded Creatures.  Over 100 families came to Lakewood Plaza to celebrate the grand opening.    Over the past summer, the Village of Richton Park renovated this shopping center.  The Richton Park economic development office is now leasing stores in the plaza.  Rents start at just $14/square foot. RICHTON PARK COMMUNITY CENTER

 

The Village of Richton Park is pleased to announce the groundbreaking for the new Richton Park Community Center!  This community center had been an important goal for the Village for over two decades.  After a year of design and citizen input, construction has begun!  Skender Construction of Chicago is the general contractor on the project, and Skender anticipates that the community center will be completed and open to the public by November of 2010.  Over the next 11 months, you will see a lot of construction activity on the land adjacent to Village Hall.  The Building Department will maintain its regular hours, but visitors will need to come to the main lobby for assistance from the Building Department or Parks and Recreation.

GRAND PRAIRIE CHORAL ARTS

 

Tomorrow, Saturday 12 Dec 2009, the Grand Prairie Choral Arts will be performing its holiday concert at Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Road, Flossmoor, IL

 

Grande Prairie Choral Arts is a not-for-profit organization in the Chicago Southland dedicated to providing excellent choral music and to promoting and furthering vocal and choral music education. Performance groups include the Grande Prairie Singers, an auditioned mixed choir for singers over the age of sixteen, as well as three children’s choirs for kindergarten through high school. Last month, my e-newsletter described recent new construction and other encouraging signs in Richton Park.  In the next few weeks, we will be fortunate enough to celebrate some grand openings and other events here in Richton Park.  The details about the upcoming events are included in the news below.

Construction season is in full swing here in Richton Park.  If you drive through our shopping districts, you will see a number of projects underway.  Many of these projects have taken advantage the Local Stimulus Package passed by the Richton Park Board of Trustees in January of 2009.  As you may recall, this local stimulus package contained initiatives to help boost business and construction in Richton Park this year. 

There is still time to participate in the local stimulus package!  Richton Park businesses are encouraged to renew their 2010 business licenses early; renew by June 30th and you will receive a 25% discount on your Business License Fee.    If you have repairs to make, now is the time to get your building permit; file for a repair/replace building permit before June 30th and you may be eligible for a discount or waiver on your building permit fee!  Visit the Richton Park building department to learn how to take advantage of these programs.

Here are some quick statistics about the state of the local economy in Richton Park during the first half of 2009:

-          So far this year, the Village has issued 312 building permits—11% more than the same time last year.

-          In 2008, total retail sales in Richton Park topped $31.3 million, up 4% over the previous year and the highest year since 2005. 

-          Total retail sales in the 1st quarter of 2009 was $8.2 million, up 2.2% over the 1st quarter of 2008, and up 3.6% over Q1 2007.

-          In the last six months, we have had several new business openings, including two new restaurants and a new gas station.

-          Several of our businesses have chosen to stay in Richton Park rather than close or move.  Our local full-service grocer, Buy-N-Save, is under new ownership as Super Save.

-          Some of our building owners have begun renovations and expansions.  The Henkel’s Sports and Trophy building is being renovated & Joann’s Liquors is expanding—both with attractive new brick facades. The Village is renovating Lakewood Plaza and signing up new tenants.  Performance Chemical has bought, cleared and is now landscaping their new side lot on Governors Highway. Watch for more planned improvements soon!

 

These are encouraging indicators.  Though there are undoubtedly challenges ahead before we completely emerge from this recession, we hope that Richton Park will be able to continue this positive momentum well into the recovery.

Many of the Village’s own Local Stimulus Programs are now in effect.  Local businesses can pre-pay their storm-water utility bill and receive a 5% discount.  Building Permits for repairs are available starting May 1st at deep discounts, and some types of permits are even free!  Temporary signs are now allowed for up to 12 weeks, instead of six.  These and other programs were approved by the Board of Trustees to help support local businesses during the recession.  Call us if you’d like more information or click here for details.

TWO NEW RESTAURANTS IN RICHTON PARK

Two new restaurants are opening this month in Richton Park.  The Ark Enterprise Restaurant is opening on May 1st.  The Ark is a sit-down family restaurant featuring southern cooking and signature menu items.  The Ark will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Stop by the Ark at 4751 Sauk Trail (near Sauk Trail and Cicero).

Richton Café is a breakfast and lunch restaurant that will be opening soon 22325 Governors Hwy, just south of Sauk Trail.  Richton Café will be a great place to stop for breakfast before your morning commute.
